There is a lot more to Johnson City than meets the eye.

Before there were streets, storefronts, and railroad tracks, Native American trails crossed this region through the mountains and valleys of Northeast Tennessee. Those old paths helped shape the roads and communities that came later.

Johnson City has had several names throughout its history, including Blue Plum, Johnson’s Depot, and Haynesville. The arrival of the railroad in the 1800s transformed the area into an important crossroads, bringing travelers, businesses, and new opportunities into the growing community.

That history is still part of Johnson City today.

You can see it in the historic buildings downtown, hear it in the stories passed down through local families, and feel it in the Appalachian culture that makes this area so unique. Johnson City has been home to farmers, railroad workers, entrepreneurs, artists, educators, musicians, and people who came here looking for a new beginning.

There is also a wonderfully colorful side to the city's history. Prohibition brought bootleggers and earned Johnson City the nickname “Little Chicago.” Old railroad stories, local legends, forgotten places, and Appalachian folklore have all become part of the character of the area.

For visitors, Johnson City is a place where history and modern Appalachian life come together. It is a city surrounded by mountains, shaped by its crossroads, and filled with stories.

You may be surprised by how much history is hiding in plain sight.

For more than three decades, Atlantis has been part of the story of downtown Johnson City, Tennessee.

Kay Davis opened Atlantis on May 15, 1989, creating a place unlike anything else in the area. What started as a small local business grew into something much bigger. 

Over the years, Atlantis became a familiar part of downtown and a place where generations of people came to explore, learn, shop, and find something a little different.

Kay and Atlantis have even been recognized in the local newspaper over the years, becoming part of the community's own story as Johnson City continued to grow and change.

For many local families, Atlantis is more than just a store. 

It is a memory.

There are people who remember coming here as children with their parents, wandering through the shelves and discovering crystals, candles, books, jewelry, incense, and all the other unusual treasures Atlantis has always been known for. Now, many of those same children have grown up and bring their own children through the doors.

That is something pretty special.

A tradition that started with one generation has been passed down to the next.

People move away and come back. Children grow up. Families change. Downtown changes. But Atlantis has remained a familiar place in Johnson City for more than 37 years.

Today, Atlantis continues that tradition, welcoming longtime customers who remember the store from their childhood and new visitors discovering it for the very first time.

It is more than just a shop.
